That's why I was up. Yeah, they were having a grand old time and they're like why are you in bed? I'm like I have to get up early. Why I said I have to record the podcast. Well, that's not until nine. I said no, we're recording at seven and Matt's face instantly went from oh, happy data. Okay, I'll talk to you later. Yeah, I'm tired.

So yeah, I was in bed. I was asleep by 10.

I know I wish I was in bed. I slept by 10, but I wasn't.

Now, I don't know for sure, but I may have been up for the new year.

Because Ephraim woke up and I wake up the page hitting me asking are you going to get him this time or do you want me to get him, as in she's telling me to get up? And take care of because I already got up with him once at some point that I slept through. So I'm like, okay, so I go up, I get his bottle, make him a new bottle, putting it back down when I bring it back to bed. It was like 12, oh, five or 12 or something, so I may have been awake.

Yeah, yeah To a crying baby.

It's not really baby anymore, yeah he's toddler.

Yeah, I ended up turning on my phone on silent because I was getting notifications. And the thing is I turned my phone on silent because I woke up to see the ball drop done always wakes me up, actually, to see the ball drop. So I wake up, I see the ball drop like oh, happy new year. And then my phone started going off so I went ahead and silenced it.

I put it to the side and I get this weird noise coming in. I'm like what is that? Don goes. What is going on with your phone? I'm like I don't know. And I pick it up and it says bulldog something. And I'm like what? So I answer it and it was Matt and Sadie. We're trying to find someone to talk to. Well, I'm not that person right now.

They know better. I am like I am in bed. Why are you FaceTiming me? So, anyhow, we hope that you all have a great new year. 2024 brings you all the blessings that you could ever desire good health.

No, not yet. Okay. Then somebody else made me cookies. I'm going to tell you about the supper. So Paige and the boys made me a very special supper last night.

Well, even before that, after church, we went to Bert's candy store.

Oh, you did.

Yeah, I was wondering where you guys went. And so I got some candy there, so you gave me cookies at church.

We went to the candy store. I got some of my special candies.

And then we go home and Paige is like we're making you a special supper. I'm like okay. So I'm like you know what this is going to be a surprise, even though I knew what it was. So I want to go out to the garage and work in the garage and outside while you guys make the supper. Basically, I was removing myself from the situation.

Right, right, so you didn't have to deal with the craziness Okay.

Um, because I'm such a good dad and husband.

Speaker 1: 4:58

So they ended up making homemade ravioli stuffed with chicken and cheese.

And then a homemade Alfredo sauce which Pages. Alfredo sauce is awesome. Okay, I'm not an Alfredo person, so so they made the ravioli and the Alfredo sauce, and then they also made chocolate cake cookies.

Oh, Pages told us that the cake cookies are so easy.

Oh yeah.

She's made a lot of them here in the last month.

Well, sometimes Okay, um, she didn't get the icing on these yet, so I had to put the icing on myself.

Whatever, boohoo, yeah, so sad, yeah, I bet so sad. Um. So yeah, it was actually really good.

She's also been making a lot of noodles the last couple of days.

Yeah, egg noodles for stir fry.

Yeah Well, I don't do it. I don't do anything Pages does.

She's just a homemaker.

She is a busy person to work all those hours and then to still do all of that canning and make noodles and just the and then to do it with the boys. She is the most patient person I have ever come upon.

She has got patience galore, and she needs patience to deal with me.

Speaker 1: 6:34

With all of you, but she is. She is just the most, and Olivia said that too. I mean, it can be a midst of a chaos at your house, aka Christmas, and Olivia's like just the patience that Paige has with everything. Like I wouldn't be able to do that. I feel like I'm kind of patient, but when you've got three little ones hanging on you, crying, they want to help, isn't that? I would say, take them out in the garage with you, I'll make dinner.

I from did come out to the garage with me for a little bit.

But you do have the boys a lot. I mean they go to the barn a lot. She sent me a cute picture yesterday of Ezek and his and his um shack it with his coffee mug, saying that he was. He was the big man and drink coffee.

He was the man drinking coffee.

Yeah, so you know, and you know he was outside. They do. They spend a lot of time outside, but the thing is is that you guys have them very much involved in everything that you're doing.

They're not sitting in front of a TV, they're not sitting in front of a iPad. You know they're. They are definitely involved in everything that you're doing.

I try to teach Ezek how a chainsaw engine, therefore a combustible engine, works. Explained it all to me. Okay, I'm going to go to the house.

Okay, but you know, he's so inquisitive, like you know, we watch them while you guys had your, your date night on on Saturday night and he, just he, he is very much, he's very detailed, he's very. He asks a lot of questions. You know, we got him some, some things to play with and they have those ties. He was very patient with those ties, getting them off, to get all those toys out. Very good, until he screams I want pancakes, and I want pancakes. And I'm like, all right, I'll get you some pancakes. Are my pancakes done yet? Oh my gosh Child, I'll get you some pancakes.

Just got to keep them fed.

That's the one that you have to with your boys. You have to have food. And now Ephraim Mitchell's boys always come to my house the other two and they will just get to the refrigerator and they know where everything is and they open their refrigerator. Ephraim comes over on Saturday and I sit him down and he went straight through the refrigerator and I'm like, and he's trying to open it and I'm like, oh, here we go, another one and it was exactly where the cheese is and how to get into the refrigerator.

So he's starting to talk to you.

He's talking very. He knows what to say when to say it, because when he was at the refrigerator wanting cheese, he was saying please, and I'm like okay, so I get him something and he'll say thank you. So yeah, he does. He says a couple of words More than Eli. He had a complete meltdown because I had no idea what he wanted, because he couldn't say what he wanted, he was trying to sign it. I think it's me and of course I don't do sign. So I'm like I have no idea what you want. You're just going to have to cry because I have no idea what you want.

Yeah, he yells a Zeke, that's funny. That is funny. And yelling at Zeke is funny, oh shoot, but he does. He gets very frustrated easily too. He's definitely yeah.

I always try to help him sound things out.

Yeah. But, I don't think it's that. I think he's just stubborn. I really do so sometimes.

All right, we'll get into this Bible study. So last week we started to get into what faith was. We talked about the simple biblical definition it's too hard to even talk the simple biblical definition, which is simply believing without seeing, and we covered the doubting time of the story. And then we went into the worldly definition of faith, which is very similar to the biblical definition, which is just having complete trust and confidence in someone or something. It's just a little bit more of a broad definition. Then we started getting into the Easton's Bible Dictionary and the three points that we wanted to make there, and the one is that Faith is a result of teaching and knowledge. So the more you study the Bible, the more you listen to sermons and do Bible studies and the more your knowledge increases. And with that increase of knowledge can also come an increase in faith, which led to our second point. Even though increase of knowledge and increase of faith go hand in hand, they are not the same. There has to be that connection between your mind, your knowledge and your heart.

Right, so you could be a biblical scholar. That doesn't mean that you've got.

Speaker 2: 11:57

Yeah, that means you may not have any faith at all. Exactly, you just have knowledge. So there is that correlation between knowledge and faith, where you have to make that connection between the two, between your mind and heart. That is saying, yes, I believe this knowledge, I think that this knowledge, this understanding, is true and trustworthy, and therefore God and Jesus is true and trustworthy, and that is where that faith comes in. And then there was a third point that we wanted to make out of that Eastern's Bible Dictionary and this is where we stopped last week and that is that there are multiple types of faith. Okay, so faith isn't just this, it's not just all or nothing. There's different levels, different types. It is very fluid, it is ever changing, and that is kind of what we're trying to talk about here, and so Is that like the saying there are walks of faith, like you have different walks of faith?

And that's kind of something towards the end of this, that that's a good way of looking at it. Okay, it's a walk of faith, so we'll cover that?

Yeah, that's one of the things that a lot of people will say you know the different walks of faith, so perfect.

So some examples of faith would be like historical faith and again, faith is believing without saying well, we can't go back to history.

The Bible is known as a history book because there is a lot of factual like.

Speaker 2: 13:32

It is a factual historical book, but not everything has been proven. There has been a lot of things that have been proven, or at least parts of things that have been proven through modern day science, through archaeology, through finding like things like the Qumran scrolls and studying those, and scholars going through and comparing texts and all this other stuff. There has been a lot of advancements in our knowledge that points to the Bible and says, yes, this is accurate, but it's not all proven yet. So we have to have that historical faith that everything in the Bible is true, trustworthy and accurate. So there is a faith there. So that'd be historical faith. And there's temporary faith and and that'll be explained better once I get into the parable that we're going to cover and then there is a saving faith which is just simply believing that Jesus is the Son of God, that he did die for our sins and that it is through his death on the cross that we have eternal life, that we have that path to salvation.

So that would be like a saving faith. And there are a lot of others. Those are just a few examples and we could have an entire podcast based on faith and the different types of faith and in different walks of faith, but we're not going to cover all those. But I do want to cover a parable and want to cover the parable of the solar and I'm going to read the actual parable that Jesus gave and then we're going to jump down and read his interpretation of that parable and then I want to do an even deeper interpretation of Jesus's interpretation Interesting, so it'll be a lot of interpreting.

I have it. I could use another half a bottle. That's all ahead of the house. So we're going to be reading Matthew 13, one through eight first, and this reads that same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea and great crowds gathered about him so that he got into a boat and sat down and the whole crowd stood on the beach and he told them many things in parables, saying A sower went out to sow and as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil. But when the sun rose they were scorched and since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, Some a hundredfold, some 60, some 30. He who has ears let him hear. And then, jumping down to Matthew 13, 18 through 23,. This is the interpretation, and this reads here.

Then the parable of the sower when anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy. Yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. As for what was sown among the thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word and it proves unfruitful. As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, In one case a hundredfold, in another sixty and in another thirty. So to clarify this, we are seeds.

We are seeds, but it's not just that we are seeds, it's those who hear the word. So those of us who hear the word are the seeds. So if you don't hear the word, then you're just not a seed, you're just dust in the wind.

So yes, a seed is an individual who hears the word.

Speaker 1: 18:33

Okay.

Speaker 2: 18:35

So, and then you know the different soils, that they only have the path, the rocky ground.

Speaker 1: 18:43

That's just the different environments, that we have it's foundations that we have. Yes.

Speaker 2: 18:49

So that's just where we are in life when we hear this word and the different situations we could be in. I mean, jesus is only limiting it here to four, but there are multiple different situations that we could be in, but I do think these four are a good overview as far as different scenarios that we can find ourselves when we hear the word.

And how different our seeds can change throughout life. I mean, we're not the same seed the entire eternity here on earth.

So the first seed mentioned here fall on the path. Fall on. A modern day example would be a road, so a path would have been well traveled. It would have been hard packed ground. So whenever a seed fell on it, it's not like you can fall down into the cracks in order to take root. It's too hard, it's literally there.

It's going to sit on top of the ground.

And in the actual parable, Jesus talks about the birds that are coming eat it and take it away. Then in his example, his interpretation, you know that's the evil one coming to take them away. So basically, it is somebody who is heart of heart, somebody who doesn't hear the word, Because we kind of all have our own personal examples of this type of situation. And it's what I'm talking about is like, whenever you may read a part of scripture over and over and over again, you hear people preach on it and different types of studies on it, but then one day, for some reason, you just see it completely different.

And it completely changes the way you look at it, the way you view it, and then that change goes throughout the Bible and you just start seeing everything different. You just get to that next level, you just get to another level of understanding and things change. So that's why we need to constantly read our Bible, because we are constantly evolving and changing and it's through that evolving and changing that more things are revealed to us through the Holy Spirit, and it's through those different lenses that we develop a deeper understanding and a deeper knowledge, which then turns into deeper faith. So I'm sure all of this has happened to all of us in some way, shape or form, and that's what I'm talking about.

These are just the people who their eyes aren't open yet, their ears aren't open yet. Like Jesus said, he who has ears like him here, well, they don't have ears, their ears aren't open. So it's going in one ear and out the other. There's no comprehension of what is being said when the Word is spoken to them and therefore the devil just has a hold over them. They're just in the hands of the evil one. So that's what Jesus is referring to whenever he's talking about person, or the seed that falls onto to the path. The second group of seeds they are the ones that fall onto rocky ground. So this type of person or this group of seeds, they do hear the word, they do accept the word, they take that step of faith where they turn this hearing and understanding into faith. But that faith is only what they heard and understood from the word initially. There's no depth to their faith, as in they've never done their own personal reading.

And now granted. Back, when Jesus was speaking, they didn't have the Bibles to read their stuff.

So I'm referring to us today, right, and I look at this as my journey for a very long time where I believed in Jesus. I believed that I believed in heaven, and those were my understandings. I didn't know scripture I couldn't have quoted you John 3.16, for the longest time but I walked my everyday life knowing that there was a heaven and there was a baby Jesus and, mind you, there was more into that, but those were the basic.

That's the shallow faith, that that's the basic.

Speaker 1: 23:56

Yeah, and that is a majority of people who walk the earth who can say I believe in heaven, I believe I'm going to go to heaven, I believe Jesus, I believe he died on a cross, I believe he came as a baby.

Speaker 2: 24:09

Those the basics of Christianity and those are the people. You hear a lot of the stories where they walk away from their faith because that is the situation they're in as well, and then they get this trial or tribulation or something that comes through like the loss of a loved one that will just make them just completely turn away from their faith.

It darkens them.

Speaker 2: 24:30

Like no, I mean.

Speaker 1: 24:32

Why would God do this to me? And instead of trying to find the answer, they take it as a hardship to them. He doesn't love me, you know, they're it, you know.

Speaker 2: 24:41

And that is coming from that shallow faith. Yes, yes. Where you're not taking that time to create that deeper understanding.

Speaker 1: 24:49

There's no room.

Speaker 2: 24:51

So that's what this group of people is referring to. And yeah, so that's that. I was gonna go something else, but I realized we already said it. So the third group of seeds.

The third group of seeds.

Speaker 2: 25:12

These are the seeds that fall into soil along with thorns, so the thorns and thistles that grew up along with them. And this is referring to somebody who, yes, they hear the word, they understand it. They make that transition from understanding to faith. And then they do some reading, some studying. They do get a deeper level of faith and a deeper understanding of faith, but they are completely surrounded in an environment where people are constantly attacking them for their faith and to the point where they may not feel like they're able to even talk about their faith, they're not able to express their faith, and they're almost like in a little personal prison or like we talked about there would be a light that is under a basket. They are not able to let their light shine because they are completely surrounded by these thorns. And again, we have to realize that what this is really, this whole parable that this is really referring to, is spiritual warfare, because this we are in the midst of a war between good and evil, between heaven and hell, basically, and even though we may not see this war going on around us which, if you would have watched my sermon on the armor of God, I kind of talked about this but there is a spiritual war going on around us and it is a battle for the souls of humankind. So the evil one is trying to get these souls to his side, to the evil side, to the darkness, where God and his heavenly armies are trying to bring us into the light. And this whole idea of this war going on that is behind this parable, so that's what these thorns that are all around us, choking us so that we can't let our light shine. That is what this is talking about here, because there is that spiritual warfare and we just happen to be in an environment that we are behind enemy lines and we're not able to create that fruit. Because that is our main job here on earth is to be fruitful, multiply, so to share our faith. It's to to spread out, share the gospel with others so that they can go out and share the gospel with others and just continue to grow. But when you're in an environment that you are surrounded by thorns, you can't. You can't create fruit in that environment. So that's what it's talking about you, even though you may have the faith and you hold strong to your faith, you're not able to go out and create that fruit, like beer called to do so.

That was the, the third group and then the last group is the seeds that fall in good, fertile soil and this would be anybody who hears the word, accepts it, does that deep dive Bible study, listen to sermons, just develops a good, strong knowledge of Jesus in the Bible and then takes that step and turns that knowledge and understanding into faith. But they're in an environment where they're surrounded by others of like-minded people who have, who also have strong faith, and then you develop this community of strong faith people and I think that's kind of where we are, because we have a good, strong church family we do. We have a lot of people around us that are faithful and, like I, I remember days when that was not the situation and I was probably more like the one on the rocky soil like you were talking about. You know, we had the basic understanding that there was heaven, hell and and there's Jesus and that he died for us. That's really about the extent of our faith and understanding right but now I think it's safe to say that.

I mean, I feel like I feel like we are picking up some of those seeds and bringing them to the soil, yeah, saying we're here, we'll help you, we'll help water and feed you and give you everything that you need, yes, to get that deep soil and get those roots going. You know, to build off that. So I do, I feel like it. Like I said, you can. You can evolve through these stages yes if you choose to, if you feel drawn to you, absolutely can.

You can have the people here who can help you build those roots or, you know, to make those roots deeper yeah, and that's where I want to finish up is you know the way we, the reason we start talking about this parable, is because of different levels of faith, and so this parable shows us how you can go from no faith at all and you are completely or you are quickly drawn up by the devil and taken into the devil's custody, all the way down to having a deep faith where you are unshakable, and there's different steps in between.

Now Jesus only gives us four. Like I said before, there are lots of different levels and that's where we start bringing in this whole idea of a walk of faith. Yes, seeds you plant a seed, typically, where that seed goes, that's where it's going to be, that's where it's going to live its life. We are the seeds mentioned here, those of us who hear the word yes we're not stationary, we can get up and move.

So that's where I think this is really talking about being, or taking that walk of faith so early on, before you even hear the word. You may hear the word and you just don't understand it. You don't right yep it goes in one ear, not the other, and you continue living your life in darkness. But eventually you will hear the word, you will move.

I'm telling you this is this is the perfect example of the journey that I've been on. I'm telling you, like you know, you, you did. You did your thing before. Like I said, and heaven, how Jesus died on cross, I got you.

Speaker 1: 31:59

Okay, then we were hit with Missy yeah being diagnosed with cancer and you're like, why, why, why us, why her? Why is this to go into our family? We're gonna pray and she's gonna be good. You know she's gonna, she's gonna beat this. She passes away. Why? And you build that little bit more faith. Why? Okay, so she is, she's in heaven. There's a purpose for all of this. That's where you go to that next step. There's a purpose in all this. I'm gonna dive into scripture. I'm gonna dive into, into my faith. I'm gonna go to church, I'm gonna listen to the word, I'm gonna see you know what's talking to me and I develop that relationship. And I come to this church and I have this community of people who support me and tell me that there's a reason for all of it. And then dad passes away and there's not even a blink of an eye yeah not even a blink of an eye.

Why do bad things happen to good people? Well, it is to help you to grow and faith right it is to help you to develop those roots of the spirit, it is to help you just to develop as a human being right just to become a better person, a better Christian, better husband, better father, better, better mother, any of those things, just to become a better person right

and it's, it's your it's your journey, it's your, it's your seed, what you can make of it yes you have. You have all the tools around you.

Just be open to all of it yes, and the ultimate goal is to be fruitful. Exactly, share your faith with others. So because again, yes, we're talking about our impersonal faith walks right everybody right in their own personal faith exactly so you need to be a person helping somebody else right, get to that next progression of their faith.

Walk so that they can then go out and become fruitful and walk and you can relate to one of the seeds that we have been to and you can see how we have developed and that you can have that same path yes, you can have that same path.
